Steps to Format a Memory Card on macOS

STOP Critical:

The process is Data Destructive and cannot be undone.
ALL THE DATA ON THE DRIVE WILL BE LOST!

  • Create a backup of all the data.
  • Make sure to select the correct drive letter.


All memory cards are pre-formatted and do not need to be formatted out of the box.
They are formatted as FAT32 or exFAT file systems.

SDHC/microSDHC 4 GB to 32 GB FAT32
SDXC/microSDXC 64 GB or higher exFAT

macOS 15 Sequoia, 14 Sonoma, 13 Ventura, and 12 Monterey

  1. Connect the card to the computer.

  2. Open Disk Utility.

  3. Select the memory card under External drive.

  4. Click Erase.


  5. Type a new Name.
    (SanDisk, memory card, iXpand, etc...).

  6. Click Format.

  7. Select a new Format.
    ExFAT or MS DOS (FAT) macoOS FAT32.

  8. Click Scheme.
    Select Master Boot Record.

  9. Click Erase.


  10. Click Done.
     



macOS 10.13 High Sierra

  1. Connect the card to the computer.

  2. Open Disk Utility.

  3. Select Show All Devices.


  4. Select the memory card under External drive.
    Click Erase.


  5. Type a new Name.
    (SanDisk, memory card, iXpand, etc...).

  6. Click Format .

  7. Select a new Format.
    ExFAT or MS DOS (FAT) macoOS FAT32.

  8. Click Scheme.
    Select Master Boot Record.

  9. Click Erase.


  10. Click Done.
